These days you can get a pretty good condenser microphone for under $100. You just need to know what you are going to be using it for, and that the cheaper condenser mic has the features you need. Below I will be telling you about the best condenser microphones under $100 you can get in 2016. If you’re not sure what type of microphone you need the check out my guide where I simply lay out the differences between all the microphones.
If you don’t want to read the whole list then overall I recommend the MXL 990. It comes in right at $100 and is the best value for your money at this price point. It comes with a shockmount.
MXL 990 Condenser Microphone With Shockmount – $95
Like I said above, the MXL 990 is the best value for a below $100 condenser mic. It comes with a slick hard case for transporting and storage, and a quality shock mount.
It is a large diaphragm condenser microphone. Large diaphragm mics generally give you a clearer sound than their smaller diaphragm counterparts. This is true for the MXL 990 and the high quality clarity this mic produces is very impressive. Especially at this price.
Large diaphragm mics are a great workhorse in the home studio and can be used for anything from acoustic guitar or drums to vocals. This particular microphone has a 34″ gold-sputtered diaphragm, and it really gives off a great sound.
The mic accepts both XLR and 14″ plugs. This means that you will need an audio interface to plug it into.
It has an old-school vintage look with a champagne colored finish that is very visually appealing. It is extremely attractive and classy looking.
This is a very versatile mic for someone on a budget. It is a great value and at less than $100, you will definitely get your money’s worth out of it.
Audio-Technica ATR2500-USB Microphone – $65
This microphone can be connected directly to your computer via a USB cable, which means you do not need any additional equipment to begin recording. This mic will work well for podcasts and vocal recording.
There is a zero-latency headphone jack on the microphone so you only need a pair of headphones to use as a monitor. There is little self-noise and it has a very good sampling rate. All important features for the professional home studio on a budget.
It comes with its own desk stand and a USB cable.
It is a great budget microphone for Mac and Windows PC.
Audio-Technica AT2020 Cardioid Condenser Microphone $99.99
Another low price, high quality microphone from Audio Technica. The AT2020 Cardioid Condenser microphone. Like the MXL 990, this microphone requires an XLR cable and you will need an audio interface. If you want the USB version of this mic you will have to spend $50 more to get the Audio Technica AT2020USB PLUS microphone. (Read here for my in-depth review)
This microphone uses a low-mass diaphragm to provide an extended frequency response (What is frequency response?) The mic is ruggedly built and is surprisingly durable. It has a fairly wide dynamic range and has no problem with high SPLs.
A very good budget microphone, and a step up from the ATR2500.
If you’re putting together a home recording studio on a budget, then finding the best condenser microphone for under $100 in 2016 can be a daunting task. These 3 microphones are tried-and-true and are widely used in home studios across the world.
If I had to pick just one though, it would be the MXL 990. It is simply the best bang for your buck.
